How to Secure Your Wi-Fi Network

Your Wi-Fi network serves as the gateway to your computers, mobile devices, and smart home equipment. Properly securing it helps prevent unauthorized access and protects your personal and business data.

Change the Default Router Password

Many routers are shipped with default administrator credentials.

Change the administrator password immediately after setting up your router.

Use Strong Wi-Fi Encryption

Enable the strongest encryption your router supports, such as:

  • WPA3 (preferred)
  • WPA2 (if WPA3 is unavailable)

Avoid using outdated security standards when possible.

Create a Strong Wi-Fi Password

Choose a password that is:

  • At least 12–16 characters long.
  • Difficult to guess.
  • Different from your router’s administrator password.

Keep Your Router Updated

Install firmware updates provided by the router manufacturer to improve security and stability.

Additional Security Tips

  • Disable unused features if you do not need them.
  • Create a separate guest network for visitors.
  • Restart your router periodically.
  • Review connected devices occasionally to identify unfamiliar devices.
