⭐ ARTICLE 17 — How to Set Up a Secure Home Office Network

Set Up a Secure Home Office Network

If you work remotely or run a small business from home, your home office network must be both fast and secure. Here’s how to set it up properly.

1. Start With a Modern Router

A router older than 4–5 years is a security risk.

Look for:

  • Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E

  • WPA3 security

  • Automatic firmware updates

  • Guest network support

2. Place Your Router in the Correct Location

For best signal:

  • Keep it high (not on the floor)

  • Avoid walls and metal surfaces

  • Place it centrally in your workspace

If you work far from the router, consider:

  • A mesh Wi-Fi system

  • A powerline adapter

  • A wired Ethernet connection

3. Secure Your Wi-Fi

Change these settings immediately:

  • Wi-Fi name (SSID): avoid your name or home address

  • Wi-Fi password: strong and unique

  • Admin password: NEVER leave default credentials

Disable:

  • WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

  • Remote admin access (unless required)

4. Use a Separate Network for Work Devices

Keep home traffic (TVs, smart devices) off your work network.

A “Work Only” network helps:

  • Improve speed

  • Reduce security risks

  • Separate personal and professional usage

5. Enable Firewall & Antivirus Protection

Every device should have:

  • Built-in firewall (Windows/macOS)

  • Antivirus or endpoint protection

  • Automatic system updates

This protects you from malware and unsafe websites.

6. Back Up Your Work Automatically

Use:

  • OneDrive

  • Google Drive

  • Dropbox

  • iCloud

Set it to auto-backup so you never lose files.
