How to Update Windows

Keeping Windows up to date helps protect your computer from security threats, improves system stability, and provides access to the latest features and performance improvements.

Most Windows devices can automatically download and install updates, but it’s still a good idea to check periodically to ensure your system is running the latest version.

Why Windows Updates Matter

Installing Windows updates can help:

  • Improve system security
  • Fix known bugs and issues
  • Enhance performance and reliability
  • Add new features and improvements
  • Maintain compatibility with newer software and hardware

Keeping your operating system current is one of the easiest ways to protect your computer.

Check for Windows Updates

To manually check for updates:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for Updates.
  5. Download and install any available updates.
  6. Restart your computer if prompted.

Some updates may require multiple restarts before installation is complete.

Enable Automatic Updates

Windows automatically installs most security and feature updates by default.

To confirm automatic updates are enabled:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Verify that automatic updates are enabled.
  4. Install any pending updates if necessary.

Allowing Windows to update automatically helps keep your device secure with minimal effort.

If Windows Won’t Update

If updates fail or become stuck, try the following:

  • Restart your computer.
  • Check your internet connection.
  • Ensure your device has sufficient free storage space.
  • Run Windows Update again.
  • Retry the installation after a few minutes.

If problems continue, additional troubleshooting may be required.
