Laptop Won’t Charge? Here Are 7 Things to Check

If your laptop stops charging, it doesn’t always mean the battery is dead. Many charging issues are caused by simple problems that can be fixed quickly. Try these checks before assuming hardware failure.

1. Verify the Power Outlet and Power Strip

Start by ruling out electrical issues.

• Try a different wall outlet
• Check if your power strip is turned on
• Plug another device into the same outlet to confirm power

2. Inspect the Charger

Physical damage can prevent proper charging.

Check for:

• Bent connectors
• Frayed or damaged cables
• Loose connections

3. Make Sure the Charger Matches Your Laptop

Using the wrong charger can cause slow charging or no charging at all.

Ensure the charger provides the correct wattage and is compatible with your device.

4. Clean the Charging Port

Dust and debris inside the port can block the connection.

• Use a flashlight to inspect the port
• Gently clean it with compressed air or a soft tool

5. Check Battery Health

Your battery may be degraded over time.

• Windows: Power & Battery settings
• Mac: System Information → Battery

Look for signs like reduced capacity or service warnings.

6. Reset the Power Controller

Resetting power management can resolve charging issues.

• Windows laptops: Remove battery (if possible), hold power button for 10 seconds
• Mac: Perform an SMC reset

7. Test with Another Charger

If a different charger works, your original charger is likely defective.
