What to Do When Your Internet Keeps Dropping

Random internet disconnects can come from your router, your internet provider (ISP), your wiring, or even interference inside your home. Below are the most common causes and quick fixes to stabilize your connection.

1. Restart Your Router

A simple reboot solves most temporary drops.

• Unplug the router
• Wait 10–15 seconds
• Plug it back in
• Wait for the connection to stabilize

2. Move Your Router Away from Interference

Avoid placing your router near:

• Microwaves
• TVs
• Thick walls
• Metal shelves
• Bluetooth devices

Place it in an open, central location for best performance.

3. Update Your Router Firmware

Manufacturers release updates that fix performance and stability issues.

Check your router’s app or admin login page for available updates.

4. Check If Only One Device Is Affected

This helps identify where the problem is coming from.

• If one device drops → likely a device issue
• If all devices drop → likely router or ISP issue

5. Check for Overloaded Wi-Fi

Too many connected devices can cause slowdowns or disconnects.

Common devices include:

• Smart TVs
• Security cameras
• Smart speakers (Alexa, Google Home)
• Phones and laptops

Disconnect unused devices or upgrade your router if needed.

6. Try Using the 5GHz Network

Most routers offer two bands:

• 2.4GHz → longer range, slower speeds
• 5GHz → faster speeds, more stable at close range

Use 5GHz when you’re near the router for better performance.

7. Contact Your Internet Provider (ISP)

If issues continue, the problem may be outside your home.

• Your line may have signal noise
• Your modem may be failing
• Your area may be experiencing outages
