Cannot Send or Receive Email in Outlook

If you’re unable to send or receive emails in Microsoft Outlook, the issue may be related to your internet connection, account settings, mailbox storage, or a temporary Microsoft 365 service issue.

Check Your Internet Connection

A stable internet connection is required for Outlook to send and receive email.

Verify that your computer is connected to the internet and that you can access websites before continuing.

Verify Your Email Credentials

If your password has recently changed, Outlook may no longer be able to authenticate your account.

Confirm you’re using the correct email address and password. If Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled, complete any required verification prompts.

Check Your Mailbox Storage

A full mailbox may prevent you from sending or receiving new messages.

Delete unnecessary emails or empty your Deleted Items folder if your mailbox has reached its storage limit.

Confirm Outlook Is Online

If Outlook is set to Work Offline, new emails will not be sent or received.

Verify that Outlook is connected and actively syncing with your mailbox.

Try Outlook on the Web

Sign in to Outlook using your web browser.

If email works in Outlook on the web but not in the desktop application, the issue may be related to the Outlook application rather than your Microsoft 365 account.

Restart Outlook

Close Outlook completely and reopen the application.

If the problem continues, restart your computer and try again.
